An award-winning author, Kathleen Blake Yancey is a prolific and world-leading authority on how to help students master the art of writing. As a past president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), Yancey has led the charge to update and expand the means by which student writing is taught and assessed in a digital age that has redefined "literacy."
Her latest contribution, the edited collection "Delivering College Composition: The Fifth Canon," won the Council of Writing Program Administrators' 2006-2007 Best Book Award. The collection of 15 essays focuses on "Delivery," which along with "Invention," "Arrangement," "Style" and "Memory," makes up the quintuple guiding principles or "canons" of rhetoric. Although delivery is often ignored or given short shrift, Yancey and her colleagues investigate how composition is delivered to students in a variety of learning environments, from research universities to historically black colleges and universities to online classrooms to AP English exams. As a result, the so-called fifth canon, described as "the redheaded Aristotelian stepchild of rhetoric and composition," gets long-deserved attention under Yancey's editorial leadership, raves one reviewer.
Yancey's CV is burgeoning with academic accomplishments, published research and accolades. She is the author, editor or co-editor of 10 scholarly books, four anthologies, two textbooks, more than 65 articles and chapters in books. She is the co-founder and co-editor of the journal Assessing Writing as well.
Few have intellectually and practically engaged rhetoric and composition as comprehensively as Yancey. It's no wonder, then, that one of her more recent interests centers on the use of technology in today's Information Age classrooms. She is co-editor of "Electronic Portfolios 2.0: Emergent Research on Implementation and Impact," which she released in 2008 along with colleagues from the National Council of Teachers of English.
Ardently committed to the acquisition of knowledge, Yancey works tirelessly with professional educational organizations, serving, for example, on the advisory board of the American Association of Colleges and Universities' (AAC&U) Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) project and as a member of the Steering Committee of the 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress.[Close Button]
