INTRODUCTION.

The ability to talk globally has never been more important than today. In a world that is increasingly inter-connected and at the same time deeply divided, we need to bridge the language gaps that all too often can cause misunderstanding and fear.

As FSU's Global Talk shows, bridging that gap can be fun. Foreign languages can unlock the door to everything from new ways of eating (courtesy of authentic foreign recipes) to movies in languages lost in translation by Hollywood and the high politics of international relations on which the peace and security of our fragile planet depend.

Languages aren't just words. They are about doing things, and Global Talk shows how to do them right here in Tallahassee. The students who produce Global Talk demonstrate the extraordinary cultural diversity to which the Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics can give access and the Ada Belle Winthrop-King Memorial Fund is proud to support them.

To borrow an Italian word that has become truly global: Bravo!
