INTRODUCTION.
Almost a century ago, on 1908 a group of female workers from the Textile
Cotton Industry of New York decided to strike to protest against the
horrible working conditions that they were all subjected. The strike went
on for several days but on March 8th, Mr. Johnson, the owner of the
industry, decided to block all the doors of the factory to prevent them
to leave.
The factory caught fire and the 129 working women imprisoned in the
factory died horribly. Among them were many European immigrants who were
trying to improve their lives.
From that historical day, March 8 became a
worldwide symbol of the suffering and sacrifice of women throughout
centuries of persecutions and therefore the starting point for the
redemption of women’s dignity. Today international women's groups
organize important events to commemorate this day remembering basic
achievements and rights gained through the struggles and sacrifices of
women from all around the world.
For this reason we decided with this
issue of Global Talk, to introduce to all the students and member of the
community of Tallahassee this important celebration in hope that some of
you may already be familiar with but probably were not aware of all of
its implications. The team of Global Talk, with this special issue, would
like to pay a tribute to all the women in every country. While you read
all the language sections learn about how women contribute and continue
to contribute to our Society. We would like to extend this celebration
for the entire month of March up till the first part of April when we
will be back again with another main theme. Look for more “Love Poems” in
the language sections, and while the spring sprinkles its glitters of sun
and breeze, feel free, for a moment, to dive in the refreshing richness
of language and culture!
